The Indiana Room

The Indiana Room

by Cindy Childress, Reference Assistant

Rediscover Crown Point by browsing the Indiana Room, located on the second floor of the new library. Did you ever wonder how Crown Point received its name, what is the oldest standing structure, or where is Ruffle Shirt Hill and how it received its name? We have books on the history of Crown Point, genealogies, old directories, even old Crown Point High School yearbooks, where I have been told you could find pictures of some parents, teachers, and even a famous local astronaut. You might even find out where our local ghosts are hanging out by browsing the Haunted Indiana series.

The Lake County Star newspaper has been a part of Crown Point for over one hundred and fifty years, and we have nearly every issue on microfilm. The newspaper is a great way to explore the important stories and events of Crown Point citizens throughout the decades. The newspaper is a great resource for searching obituaries of family and friends.

Genealogists can take advantage of our Ancestry.com (available only at the library) and Heritage Quest databases. Indexes for Crown Point marriages, cemetery, and land transfers could provide clues to that elusive brick wall you have struggling with and the pamphlet file is full of many hidden gems. Also, check the resources on our website under Research & Information, then Genealogy & History.
