Grow your family tree
October is designated in many U.S. States as "Family History Month." This month, local resident, Donna Wetzel has created a genealogy display at the Crown Point Library.
Celebrate your family history and begin to create your family tree. Begin by talking to your family, examine family scrapbooks and photo albums and try online resources like ANCESTRY.COM. which can be accessed for free from the Crown Point Library. This database contains more than 4 billion names. It has coverage of the United States and the United Kingdom, including census, vital, military, court, and immigration records, as well as record collections from Canada, Europe, and other areas.
For additional tips, ask the Reference Librarian at the Crown Point or Winfield Branch Library.

Crown Point Library Teen Volunteers
Our teen volunteers are young patrons who assist library staff with a variety of library-related tasks. Many of our teenagers volunteer at the library to fulfill community service requirements for school and other institutions. This important program allows out teenagers to develop a sense of ownership of the library and its services.

Become a Friend of the Library
What is Friends of the Library? Friends of the Crown Point Library (FOCPL) is a private non-profit organization established to provide financial and political support for the Crown Point Community Library.
How does FOCPL help the library? Friends of the Crown Point Library funds projects and programs not included in the library system's operating budget, such as educational and cultural programs, and are advocates for the library within the community.
How is the FOCPL group funded? Since FOCPL is not part of the county government or the library system, it raises its own operating funds. FOCPL raises money through book sales, membership dues, donations, bequests, and special events.
How is FOCPL organized? The FOCPL meets monthly on the second Tuesday at 10:00 at the Crown Point Library. New members are always welcome.
How can I join FOCPL or make a donation? To join the FOCPL simply fill out the membership form located on the back of the monthly newsletter or pick one up from the Circulation Desk. Monetary donations should be made out to the Friends of the Crown Point library. Membership forms and donations can be mailed to the FOCPL at the Crown Point Library, 214 S. Court Street, Crown Point, IN 46307.
What benefits do I get for my membership? Members receive the monthly newsletter by mail, invitations to library and Friends events, and special previews to book sales. Membership dues also provide additional funding for children's library programs such as Summer Reading, Teen Summer Reading, Teen Volunteers and much more.
Join today and become involved! The next meeting is Tuesday, September 14 at 10:00 a.m. at the Crown Point Library. New members are always welcome!
Super Saturdays!
The next Super Saturday is scheduled on October 2 at 2:00 p.m.
Read, Read, and Read Some More!
Do you have a budding reader in your home? There are all sorts of fun and simple ways to encourage literacy in your family's every day life.
- Play with letters, they are all around us. Help your child locate letters on signs, cars, buildings, and, of course books. Choose a different letter to be on the lookout for every day.
- Play with sounds - we have lots of great books of poetry. If you'd like suggestions, we would be happy to share some of our favorites with you!
- Play with books. Read to or with your child every day. Talk about what you see and hear and don't forget to ask your child questions about what might happen next.
We're happy to read to your children too. We create weekly story times to introduce your children to books and reading fun. Visit the library or go online and sign up for one of our story time events today at www.lakenetnwi.net/member/crownpointlibrary/

Read to the Dogs!
(Aedin Obringer reads to Gunner)
The Crown Point Library invites school age children to visit the library during summer reading and Read to the Dogs!
Children can come to the library where the Read to the Dogs event will take place. They sign up at the Youth Service Desk and select a book to read to a furry friend. All of the dogs and handlers who participate are affiliated with Power Paws - A local organization that provides animal-assisted therapy to adults and children.
(Alyssa Zena reads to Apollo)
The program is designed to allow kids the chance to read to a non-judgemental listener, one who will accept the story exactly as they read it. Animals are ideal reading companions because they create a relaxed, comfortable, and safe environment. When a child is having "fun" reading, they think of themselves as a good reader, which helps their self esteem and makes them eager to read.
The next Read to the Dogs events are:
Tuesday, July 27 at the Crown Point Library from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. and
Wednesday, July 28 at the Winfield Branch Library from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m.
