Local artist displays artwork at library

Blind artist, Randall Harris, with assistance from his sighted brother Joe Harris, has two unique abstract wood sculptures on display throughout the month of September at the Crown Point Library.

The wood sculptures are made of maple wood rough-cut at a local sawmill. The artist has also included his first sculpture, a soapstone carving of his own hand. Harris is a graduate of Crown Point High School, 1965.

Do you have a collection or artwork you want to display, please contact Laura Clemons at 663-0270. The display case is reserved on a first-come, first-served basis and allows individuals to display their items for one month.

Become a Friend of the Library

Interested in volunteering at the library, meeting new people, assisting with library activities, then consider joining the Crown Point Library Friends of the Library organization. The group is looking for more active members, please join us at the next monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 14 at 10:00 a.m.

What is Friends of the Library? Friends of the Crown Point Library (FOCPL) is a private non-profit organization established to provide financial and political support for the Crown Point Community Library.

How does FOCPL help the library? Friends of the Crown Point Library funds projects and programs not included in the library system's operating budget, such as educational and cultural programs, and are advocates for the library within the community.

How is the FOCPL group funded? Since FOCPL is not part of the county government or the library system, it raises its own operating funds. FOCPL raises money through book sales, membership dues, donations, bequests, and special events.

How is FOCPL organized? The FOCPL meets monthly on the second Tuesday at 10:00 at the Crown Point Library. New members are always welcome.

How can I join FOCPL or make a donation? To join the FOCPL simply fill out the membership form located on the back of the monthly newsletter or pick one up from the Circulation Desk. Monetary donations should be made out to the Friends of the Crown Point library. Membership forms and donations can be mailed to the FOCPL at the Crown Point Library, 214 S. Court Street, Crown Point, IN 46307.

What benefits do I get for my membership? Members receive the monthly newsletter by mail, invitations to library and Friends events, and special previews to book sales. Membership dues also provide additional funding for children's library programs such as Summer Reading, Teen Summer Reading, Teen Volunteers and much more.

Join today and become involved! The next meeting is Tuesday, September 14 at 10:00 a.m. at the Crown Point Library. New members are always welcome!

Super Saturdays!

Join us on Saturday afternoons for a craft or activity and stories about the week's theme. This event is geared toward children in grades 1-6. Space is limited and registratio is required. Sign up at the Youth Service Desk or online at www.lakenetnwi.net/member/crownpointlibrary/

Read, Read, and Read Some More!

Do you have a budding reader in your home? There are all sorts of fun and simple ways to encourage literacy in your family's every day life.

• Play with letters, they are all around us. Help your child locate letters on signs, cars, buildings, and, of course books. Choose a different letter to be on the lookout for every day.



• Play with sounds - we have lots of great books of poetry. If you'd like suggestions, we would be happy to share some of our favorites with you!
  


• Play with books. Read to or with your child every day. Talk about what you see and hear and don't forget to ask your child questions about what might happen next.

Join us at one of our monthly book discussion group:

• "3rd Monday at 1 Book Group" This group meets the 3rd Monday of the month at the Crown Point Library. They will be discussing: The Good Earth by Pearl Buck on
  Monday, October 18, 2010.
  


• The Winfield Branch Book Group meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month at the Winfield Branch. They will be discussing: Jim the Boy by Tony Earley on Tuesday, October 12, 2010.

New members are always welcome. Copies of the books are available at the Ciruclation Desk.

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month and the Crown Point Library wants to make sure that your child has the smartest card of all — a library card. Observed since 1987, this is a time when the American Library Association and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all. Library cards are FREE and bring you a world of opportunity— no matter what your age.
